Peter Pan by James BARRIE

James Matthew BARRIE (1860 – 1937)
Born in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland, studied at Glasgow Academy, Forfar Academy, Dumfries Academy and Edinburgh University. He worked for a year and a half as a staff journalist on the Nottingham Journal, later started as a playright. He wrote: Better Dead (1887), When a Man's Single (1888), The Little Minister (1891), Two of Them (1893), A Lady's Shoe (1894), The Little White Bird, or Adventures in Kensington Gardens (1902), Little Mary (1903) Peter Pan (1904), Alice Sit-by-the-Fire (1905), Pantaloon (1905), Peter and Wendy (1911), A Kiss for Cinderella (1912), Mary Rose (1920), etc.

'Holding up A Train' by O.Henry

O.Henry (William Sydney Porter) (1862 – 1910)
Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA. He attended school for a short time, worked as a clerk in a drugstore, later on a ranch. He wrote Cabbages and Kings (1904), The Four Million (1906), Heart of the West and The Trimmed Lamp (1907), The Gentle Grafter and The Voice of the City (1908), Options (1909), Whirligigs and Strictly Business (1910).

Note. The man who told me these things was for several years an outlaw in the South-west and a follower of the pursuit he so frankly describes. His description of the modus operandi should prove interesting, his counsel of value to the potential passenger in some future “hold-up,” while his estimate of the pleasures of train robbing will hardly induce anyone to adopt it as a profession. I give the story in almost exactly his own words. O. H.

Samuel Butler 'CAMBRIDGE PIECES'

Samuel Butler (1835 – 1902)
Born at Langar Rectory, Nottinghamshire, England. He studied at Cambridge, became a sheep farmer in New Zealand, then turned to writing and music. He wrote Erewhon (1872), Erewhon Revisited (1901), The Way of All Flesh (1903).

15 works of Samuel Butler
150 works by S.Butler
Cambridge Pieces, by Samuel Butler

I sit down scarcely knowing how to grasp my own meaning, and give it a tangible shape in words; and yet it is concerning this very expression of our thoughts in words that I wish to speak.  As I muse things fall more into their proper places, and, little fit for the task as my confession pronounces me to be, I will try to make clear that which is in my mind.

Henry James - WASHINGTON SQUARE

Henry James (1843 – 1916)
Born in New York City, USA. He was educated by private tutors, continued education in Europe, attended Harvard Law School. He wrote Watch and Ward (1871), The American (1877),  The Europeans (1878), Daisy Miller (1879), The Portrait of a Lady (1881), Washington Square (1881), The Bostonians (1886), What Maisie Knew (1897), The Turn of the Screw (1898), The Sacred Fount (1901), The Wings of the Dove (1902), The Ambassadors (1903), The Golden Bowl (1904), The American Scene (1907).

During a portion of the first half of the present century, and more particularly during the latter part of it, there flourished and practised in the city of New York a physician who enjoyed perhaps an exceptional share of the consideration which, in the United States, has always been bestowed upon distinguished members of the medical profession. This profession in America has constantly been held in honor, and more successfully than elsewhere has put forward a claim to the epithet of 'liberal.' In a country in which, to play a social part, you must either earn your income or make believe that you earn it, the healing art has appeared in a high degree to combine two recognized sources of credit. It belongs to the realm of the practical, which in the United States is a great recommendation; and it is touched by the light of science - a merit appreciated in a community in which the love of knowledge has not always been accompanied by leisure and opportunity…

James Joyce 'ULYSSES'

James Joyce (1882 – 1941)
Born in Dublin, Ireland. He studied in Dublin University College, became a tutor in English, formed a company of English players in Zurich. He wrote Dubliners (1914), A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), Ulysses (1922), Work in Progress (1927), Finnegans Wake (1939).

Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. A yellow dressinggown, ungirdled, was sustained gently behind him by the mild morning air. He held the bowl aloft and intoned:
--INTROIBO AD ALTARE DEI.
Halted, he peered down the dark winding stairs and called out coarsely:
--Come up, Kinch! Come up, you fearful jesuit!
Solemnly he came forward and mounted the round gunrest. He faced about and blessed gravely thrice the tower, the surrounding land and the awaking mountains. Then, catching sight of Stephen Dedalus, he bent towards him and made rapid crosses in the air, gurgling in his throat and shaking his head. Stephen Dedalus, displeased and sleepy, leaned his arms on the top of the staircase and looked coldly at the shaking gurgling face that blessed him, equine in its length, and at the light untonsured hair, grained and hued like pale oak.
