O benefit of ill! now I find true That better is by evil still made better; And ruin'd love, when it is built anew, Grows fairer than at first, more strong, far greater. So I return rebuked to my content And gain by ill thrice more than I have spent.

Is it thy will thy image should keep open
My heavy eyelids to the weary night?
Dost thou desire my slumbers should be broken,
While shadows like to thee do mock my sight?

How would thy shadow's form form happy show
To the clear day with thy much clearer light,
When to unseeing eyes thy shade shines so!
How would, I say, mine eyes be blessed made
By looking on thee in the living day,
When in dead night thy fair imperfect shade
Through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay!
All days are nights to see till I see thee,
And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.
Шутливые, а иногда абсурдные стихи, состоящие, как правило, из пяти строк - это Английские лимерики (Limericks). Чаще всего, первая строка лимерика совпадает с последней, в оставшиеся центральные три строки раскрывают некий сюжет с главным персонажем. На мой взгляд, английские лимерики отчасти похожи на русские частушки.
Для изучающих английский язык лимерики представляют практический интерес: с их помощью можно тренировать как звуки, так и ударение с интонацией. Для этого нужно максимально точно повторять за диктором текст.
